La Ramonette Viewpoint

23
The wooden kiosk called La Ramonette stands on a historically strategic site—long before Bouillon Castle existed. Today it’s a great photo spot with views over the city, the river, and the castle.
This 9-meter-wide Gallo-Roman watchpost, surrounded by a moat carved into the rock and a 40-meter-diameter rampart, served as an observation point over the valley.
Its origins go back to Celtic times. In the 11th century, it belonged to Gozelo I, Duke of Lorraine. The Ardenne-Verdun family previously owned it, along with the Château-le-Duc fortress near the Menuchenet forest.
Due to a lack of water, this site was abandoned in favor of a more suitable rock, where the current castle was built—a site with natural defenses and a water source.
